OS X should just mark the file deleted, but not actually reuse the space
until it has to.  You should let a mac person take a look at it as there
are some great utilities on the mac to recover files.

If you need some help, I recommend MacVantage in Raleigh.  They are in
the phone book.  Ask for Bob Chandler.

I would offer to help myself, but I no longer have a mac.

Under RedHat 8 I was unable to mount Mac HFS disks.  When I dug into the

problem, it appeared that the HFS driver had not been maintained and was
no 
longer compatible with the kernel.  I haven't tried it under RH9 to see
if 
the situation has got any better.

Depending on what the camera used for storage, it may be possible to 
retrieve the pictures from there.  There are several apps for Windows
that 
let you recover pictures from flash media.  A quick Google found:

as one example.  This only works if he hasn't overwritten the cards with

more photos, though.
