Jeremy is right.  You don't need JSP's to do simple applets.  If you want
some simple examples check out my java samples at:
http://www.skink.net/~davis/progs/java/
You can see an applet running and then you can click to the source for 
my samples.  If you get down to the swing section you can even see how
I put the magic string which tells the browser to autoinstall a jvm
on the client.  Oh yeah, you do this by clicking view source in your 
browser.
