It looks to me like there's a small disconnect here.  Jon, please
correct me if I'm wrong, but what you seem to be saying is that if you
change group permissions on a file it happens immediately.  What I think
Joseph is saying is that if a user is not a member of a group, and then
you add him to the group file so they're now a member of a particular
group, then *that change* doesn't take effect until you log out then
back in (or possibly using the newgrp command Jeremy mentioned).

Did I understand everything correct?  This would make sense since the original
poster mentioned creating a user and then later adding them to the group
with permission to write to a particular directory.

So, short story is, changes on permissions of files happen immediately,
but changes in a user's group status doesn't happen immediately.
