if you say this because he "shifts" the lever towards the rear, your 
conclusion may be incorrect.  many race car transmissions have a 
different shift pattern than street cars.  since you rarely use first 
gear on the track, it is taken out of the H pattern to make 2 thru 5 
shifting faster (only one "jog" shift instead of two):

    2  4     1  3  5	
1  3  5     2  4
 race       street
