FWIW, SSH and VNC are interoperable.  You just have to enable remote 
loopback on the side running the VNC server.  I.e., run VNC server 
<->client (viewer) over SSH.  My preference is TightVNC as it is really 
designed for slow links (modem or broadband access from internet, 
limited upstream pipe).
