Possibly.

I was getting messages like this starting about three months ago:

EXT2-fs error (device ide0(3,1)) ext2_write_inode: unable to read inode 
block inode=3015009 block=6029322
ide0: reset: success

About a month, that drive completely died and I started to notice that 
files were missing... Important files, like sendmail (oops!) or files 
in the /etc directory (bigger oops!). My recommendation would be, if 
you want to keep using this drive, back up /var and /etc nightly... 
When I reinstalled, I had to almost completely reconfigure. It was a 
pain. (Lost all the mail in my inbox, too.)
