I had a W98 die recently. Had lot's of family pics too.  Plugged in
Knoppix and I could "see" the pics.  Now I am scp'ing them to another
box. Happy ending here.

She may find joy in plugging in a Knoppix disk and seeing the 
pics safe and sound.  She may prefer to preserve the pics
without sending the disk to a recovery house (several points
of failure exist with this approach).
