Absolutely unauthoritative response: Sounds like a deferred write, which is
often used to improve immediate performance (your application doesn't block
while waiting for the device)..  I've seen removable media get totally
trashed (under Windows) because of this, when a person performs a manual
hardware-eject (i.e. push the eject button) and insert different media
before the deferred write occurs..  I don't think Windows uses deferred
writes for floppies, but maybe Sarge does?  Maybe there's a mount option to
disable deferred writes?  That strikes me as a rediculously long
defer-time..
