JOB DESCRIPTION

Job title: Instructional Web Server Administrator

Reports to Director, Instructional Computing

Duties and responsibilities

The Instructional Web Server Administrator is responsible for
installing, maintaining, administering, and supporting web servers for
instructional use by Durham Tech faculty and students.  The specific job
duties are described below:

     1. Install and maintain instructional web server hardware,
        operating system software, and server application software,
        performing upgrades as needed.  Work closely with Information
        Technology Services staff to integrate instructional web servers
        with the campus network and to troubleshoot any problems with
        the servers' connection to the Internet.
     2. Ensure the continuous operation of instructional web servers by
        securing them from unauthorized access, maintaining appropriate
        backups, and troubleshooting and correcting problems as they
        arise.
     3. Perform all server administration tasks including setting up and
        maintaining user accounts and other maintenance tasks specific
        to server application software.
     4. Assist instructional personnel with the use of the web servers
        to facilitate, enhance, and support instruction.  Assistance may
        include training, technical advice, research, implementation of
        new features or software, troubleshooting, and problem
        resolution.
     5. Provide ongoing technical support for faculty and students using
        servers, web applications, and course management system.
     6. Create and maintain web pages, scripts, and web database
        applications to support instruction.
     7. Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and
        guidelines concerning the use of the web servers for
        instruction.
     8. Evaluate system performance regularly and make recommendations
        for server upgrades and enhancements.
     9. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of
        Instructional Computing, the Executive Dean, the Chief
        Instructional Officer, or the President in meeting the needs of
        the college.

Required minimum qualifications

     1. One year experience as a web server administrator in a Linux or
        Unix environment.
     2. Baccalaureate degree with computer-related coursework and/or
        training, or Associates Degree in a computer-related field.
     3. Experience with web programming, web database management, and
        scripting.
     4. Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work in a
        collaborative environment.
     5. Understanding of and commitment to the mission and goals of the
        North Carolina Community College System.

Desired qualifications

     1. Experience administering web servers for an educational
        institution and supporting web server applications for the
        delivery of instruction.
     2. Experience administering Blackboard.
     3. Experience with ColdFusion, Perl, MySQL, or Oracle.

Normal working hours

A forty-hour week is required on a flexible schedule as needed to
complete required assignments, with some night or weekend work possible.
