    I would agree with this. While not currentally running my audio app 
(Audacity) on Linux, I find that these basic items apply:

1) Apply any/all fixes to speed up Hard Disk access times - hdparm, dma, etc. 
(This was very important on my P2/433.)

2) I shutdown all network apps, mail, browsers. In Linux this is a lot easier!

3) Kill everything else you don't need - anti virus, icq, IM. Make the box a 
pure audio processor. Just because you have the latest fast cpu don't ignore 
the basics.
