[TriLUG] Kernel freezes at boot

Hi all,

I'm running Debian stable and up until yesterday the box ran kernel
2.4.27. I compiled a vanilla 2.4.28 with the same settings as the
2.4.27, copied the new bzImage and System.map into /boot, added a new
entry to /etc/lilo.conf, ran lilo, and rebooted. After selecting the
2.4.28 kernel at the lilo boot screen, the machine froze after
displaying "Uncompressing LInux... Ok, booting the kernel" and reboot
itself after about 30 seconds.

Thinking I had a problem with my new kernel, I tried loading the old
2.4.27 kernel and had the same problem. I thought perhaps lilo was
being weird, so I rebooted with a live cd, chrooted into my root
partition, and apt-get installed grub. The grub menu now comes up
fine, and grub can load both the 2.4.27 and 2.4.28 kernels, but once
again the machine freezes after uncompressing the kernel.

My boot partition (hda1) is the first primary partition on the hard
drive, and my root partition is sitting on a logical partition as
hda5.

Any ideas whats wrong? I can post any config files or info if needed.

Thanks.
