TITLE:				LAN SUPPORT SPECIALIST

LOCATION:			Technology Services Division (Raleigh, NC)

POSITION TYPE:			Permanent Full-time

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The person in this position will provide hardware
 and software technology and architectural recommendations for local
 area networks and stand-alone microcomputers.  The Engineer will
 evaluate hardware and software and document the results of the
 findings as white papers and is responsible for defining and
 documenting LAN Architecture Standards for LAN technology in the
 Judicial Branch. Job duties include: evaluating local area network
 hardware and software, which includes file servers, personal
 computers, laptops, printers, print servers; documenting results of
 technology evaluations and present to the Technology Committee as
 needed; and developing the Architectural Standards documentation for
 the LAN Support Team to allow for the installation of hardware and
 software.  In addition, the Engineer will work with vendors to keep
 abreast of future technology; remain abreast of rapidly changing
 hardware and software technologies by reading trade magazines and
 journals as well as attending seminars and classes; and recommend
 configurations, which involve analyzing user needs and determining the
 hardware and/or software that will best, meet those needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Requires an understanding of system
 internals to insure that all components will integrate properly;
 knowledge of design and implementation of Ethernet topology networks,
 LAN operating systems platforms, Novell Netware and Microsoft NT/2000
 Server, build and install PC?s using PC components, PC operating
 systems and software packages, DOS, Linux, Windows 2000/XP, 3270
 communications (TN3270, IRMA), Microsoft Word, communications
 protocols (SNA, TCP/IP, etc.), and hardware devices such as servers,
 bridges, routers, gateways.  Requires ability to analyze needs, select
standards/strategies, and resolve technical problems; manage work time
 to meet schedules; and communicate highly technical information to non
 technical users.

BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Graduation from a four year college
 or university with a major in computer science or related technical
 field, and three years experience in the appropriate field of
 electronic data processing; or equivalent combination of education and
 experience.
