I have a Phillips Series 1. It came with a 15GB drive. I took it out
and replaced it with a single 80GB. The 15 is stored away in case of
emergency. The 80GB drive has proven to be enough space for me. I
used a bootable iso I got off the net to copy everything to the new
drive, extend the recording space and to enable telnet. I added an
ethernet card at the same time. Since then I've added TivoWeb, ftp,
the nfs module, and mfsStreams TivoWeb module.

I've never had any problem with choppy video. Lately the machien has
just been locking up at random intervals. I think the HD is on it's
way out.
