Well I would say that it could definitely be a possibility that gnome did
that.  I was originally doing KDE with it and I was checking out the latest
gnome package the other day.

Ooh ooh ooh!  I've seen this before!  And I have no idea how to fix it.  But

I have definitely seen the root user have problems like what you are 
describing.  In fact, the way I've seen it, is (for example) konsole will 
launch and then immediately close.  At the time, I and some associates had 
theorized (based on circumstantial evidence) that logging into a Gnome 
environment would somehow scramble KDE and cause this.  Can anyone expand on

that?
