You have to get your video card doing 3d. The simplest way is to try the knoppix game cd if you have an ati or nvidia video card.

Speaking of which... what does it take to play some of these games? 
I've got a modern machine with 2.1GHz AMD chip, 512MB RAM and stuff like Tux Racer is still unplayable.
