This article might shed some more light on 3D with Linux. Seems ATI is
following the same path as NVIDIA and releasing closed source binary
drivers, with the goal of meeting or exceeding NVIDIA's performance on
Linux platforms.

Me? I've got my eyes on an ATI 9600XT. With a little work, it can be
had for not much over $100.
