[TriLUG] init 5 problem

I a running my Fedora Core 3 box on init 5 and have the following line 
in the inittab

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

The box initializes just fine and I can log in just fine, but if I do
a ctl-alt-backspace to end X the screen just goes back to non graphics
screen with a cursor in the top left and corner.

If I log out everything is ok.

does anybody know why ctl-alt-backspace would not work?
