I used to use thttpd (and then tux), but found they had too many
limitations for very little gain. I now happily use boa: it's
written in C, compiles easily, and even does cgi. I use it for a
lot of my static stuff, and although it does not thread/fork/create
children, it's fast enough that it does not matter. It's 62552 bytes
on my system.
