I'm not sure what your settings are in Thunderbird, but when I delete
a message, it does to a designated Trash, removes itself entirely from
my Inbox or whatever folder I might have deleted it from. If I want
it, I go to Trash, if I Empty Trash, it's gone for good, otherwise
known as purge in other email programs. Check your settings on this
one. I'm not sure which one to point you to, but Thunderbird has more
options than just a little icon, which, I guess based on my settings,
I've never seen this way. I see a little trashcan like icon for
things Thunderbird deems "junk".

The UI thing I can't find an option for in Thunderbird that annoys me
is this: if you delete a message and there is another message below it
in the list, it automatically opens the next message. I have to close
the message I want to delete first before deleting it so this doesn't
happen. For example, if I have a message specifically marked as
unread, and I've opened the message above it then delete it, it opens
the next message automatically, the one I had marked as unread, which,
then gets marked as read again! *arg* So I have to close that
message and set it to unread *again*. My preference would be that
when I delete a message, it closes that window and goes back to the
main Thunderbird window *without* opening up another message! I
haven't bothered to see if this feature request has been put in to
Thunderbird or not, but I hope so. :)

just my $0.02,
