It's often the case that even in bridge mode, it maintains an IP address 
on the "internal" Ethernet interface.  Unfortunately, because of the 
less-than-configurable router between your actual internal subnet and 
it's internal interface, you probably won't be able to configure the IP 
addressing in such a fashion that you can talk to it directly.  On the 
other hand, if you have an old box lying around to put linux on, and 
replace that router (or if you're using a router along the lines of the 
WRT54G, which runs Linux under the hood), you can use an additional IP 
subnet on the external interface of the router (the "internal" interface 
of the bridge) and be able to address the bridge when the network is 
properly cabled up for normal operation.
