I have been using the "auditor's toolkit" www.remote-exploit.org kanotix
based live CD for work on my T42 with the IPW card as well.  They also
say that there are issues with this chipset, so much so that they make a
CD without drivers for that chipset.  This prevents the system lockups
that I was seeing, but I have to use a different wireless device.
