[TriLUG] best graphics card with Ubuntu

There are two types of graphics drivers available for linux these
days. Open source, and vendor supplied vendor only. I believe that
the open source ati drivers are in better shape than the open source
nvidia drivers, so if you are planning on running those, you may have
better luck with an ATI card.

The binary drivers tend to offer better performance, but they have
their downsides. While the binary ATI drivers have improved a lot
recently, I still find the nvidia drivers easier to deal with. If you
plan on running the binary drivers, I recommend an nvidia card. How
much do you want to spend on this card? For ~ $150 you can get a
nvidia 6600 card that should play the latest games without trouble.

Personally I run an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and 9000 mobility with the
open source drivers on my desktop and laptop. Both cards are aging,
but can still eek out a bit of playability on games like Doom3. The
both play Quake III like a champ with both the binary and open source
drivers. You can pick up a 9000 non pro for ~ $30.
