The simple solution may be to try an upgrade option using the latest
Fedora Core 4 set. As far as I know, upgrading to a newer version of a
Red Hat[-based] distribution is quite safe and shouldn't present any
headaches. On the other hand, starting from scratch affords you a clean
solution. Then again, it doesn't hurt to try an upgrade. As always,
back up any valuable data.

If you're going to install from scratch, try Ubuntu[0] Hoary (5.04) if
you prefer GNOME, or try Kubuntu[1] Hoary (5.04) if you prefer KDE.
Other environments like Xfce, Enlightenment, and IceWM are all
available.
