How important is the data on the drive? Is it super-important,
irreplaceable stuff? (like family or baby pics) 

If it is, can you post the WD model number of the drive to the list and
let us look for one that runs, and try swapping the electronics? 

I have seen some models of drive where the servo control circuits burn
out and won't drive the heads around. Some brands "click" like you are
talking about. 

If this data is really important to you, we should, at least, try a
board swap before declaring "fin".
