Senior Systems Administrator


Required Skills

This position requires strong interpersonal and communications skills and
the ability to write clear English prose.  Must be able to make
presentations to client audiences and colleagues.

Must be able to solve problems quickly, automate management and monitoring
procedures, and be capable of working independently.

A strong understanding of Linux/Unix operating system is necessary,
including manual and custom installations and the configuring of services.

Requires a solid understanding of networking/distributed computing
environment concepts; understanding of the principles of routing,
client/server programming, and the design of consistent network-wide file
system layouts.

Strong programming skills in an administrative language, preferably PERL,
for automating system administration processes and developing new
management services.

Experience with network security; high-level understanding of firewalls,
intrusion prevention systems, auditing, vulnerability assessment, an
understanding of security and network-related monitoring tools, and the
ability to take a leadership role in incident handling for the
organization.

Experience with Unix security issues, mitigating or eliminating general
problems that apply to all Unix-like operating systems including
vulnerabilities in the password authentication system, file system,
virtual memory system, and in common network protocols such as NFS, NIS,
and the Unix RPC mechanism.  Experience securing some of the most common
Internet services on the Unix platform, including Apache, WU-FTPD, SSH,
SSL, Sendmail, and BIND.

Familiarity with supporting web server application platforms (such as
TomCat, JBoss, Cold Fusion MX, and other open source or commercial
products.)

Familiarity with enterprise storage management.

Familiarity with database programming for automating system administration
tasks.  Oracle and MySQL experience is a plus.

Comfortable with the C language, and porting programs from one platform to
another, and to write small C or C+ programs.

Ability to document policies, procedures, and tests and participate in
change management requirements.

Required Background

A degree from a 4-year accredited college or university, preferably in
computer science or a related field.

More than five years of previous system administration experience.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership within the Unix/Linux staff on the SysAdmin task,
including project management, assignment of tasks, and mentoring junior
staff.

Design/implement complex local and wide-area networks of machines

Manage a large, complex site or network.

Work under general direction from senior management.

Establish or recommend policies on system use and services.

Provide input and recommendations for purchasing decisions.
