I was rather pleased to find a cheap ($13 or so) generic
cardbus 3-port firewire card, part# GUN2300 from geeks

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=GUN2300&cat=CCD

With it I `fsck -f -D ` a nearly full 250G disk and the disk
is quite fine afterwards for rw etc. So it looks like it
works just fine at least for accessing disks. I use USB and
firewire for moving files between machines and to a backup
unit. The one I've had success with is the ME-720U2F combo
usb/firewire external enclosure from DealSonic. Other
posters to this list have said that Intrex has an equivalent
unit that they're happy with.

I've not had a lot of luck with the PCI firewire/usb cards
from Intrex - one works, then you come back the next month
to get some more, and it's the same brand, but the card
looks different and doesn't work.
