based on kevin's comments, i changed the design of the server to include 
redundant power supplies.  i also used larger hard drives and included, 
after conversation with an intel system engineer, a 4th hard rive as a 
hot spare if one of the RAID5 drives were to die.  so, please make any 
helpful comments on the design:

it is quite a bit more expensive.  however, i'd rather go for quality 
than price.
