you are correct.

the reason that i'm using ssh/putty is because it's 1. simple and 2. i
really only need to tunnel through port 22 to get to vnc on my machines at
home. it's a little work to set up separate tunnels for two or three
machines but dang it works and it certainly seems to be secure.

all,

does anyone consider openVPN (or any VPN solution) to be simple to set up?
remember, i don't know much about VPNs. i've got the linksys router/firewall
at home (that has a vpn implementation). i've been able to set up VPNs
between it and my other offices that have the same router but have never
been able to get a (windows or linux) client to connect directly to it.

Just from my point of view a VPN will link ALL of your ports to the
connected network so it will be just like being at your home network.
Using SSH/PuTTY will only do a select number of ports and you have to setup
more (IMHO).
