One thing to note....Ubuntu boots from the CD.  So create a bootable 
ubuntu CD.  Use your
external USB 2 drive.  Just realize the USB drive will be much slower 
than an internal... Linux will be
faster in general than windows because NTFS is dog slow and you don't 
need all the virus checkers and
garbage running.  However, over the USB...it won't be fast.  *DONT* use 
the NTFS stuff to mount your
windows stuff as READ/WRITE.  It is safe to do as read only.
