With Linux (and BSD) running carrier grade services across multiple
boxen, there really is no need for down time... Unless your colo has a
massive power outage that throws all the breakers on your power strips :-)
And now with the evolution of the virtual machine running on a cluster
of boxen that don't even have to be in the same proximity, down time
should almost vanish as a carrier concept.
Still, I find myself at clients every now and then and I need a tiny
laptop that lets me explore their network. It's nice if I only have to
wait 30 seconds for that laptop to boot - 10 seconds for the bios, 20
seconds for the kernel and services. People watching it boot think it
has a very speedy processor :-)
