Oh I'm glad you mentioned Knoppix.

Ubuntu has replaced Knoppix in my sysadmin rescue kit mainly because 
Ubuntu (as a live CD) seems to support more RAID adapters and also has 
LVM tools.  With Knoppix I always seem to have to jump through hoops to 
get to my local filesystems so I let it go about a year or so ago.
