Amen. If you're just using ubuntu as a desktop, I say use the GUI. I'm
using it in two places as a server with no GUI, so I like aptitude. :)

With today's release of Ubuntu 7.04 I got to wondering how many
TriLUGers use some for of Ubuntu. But, rather than leaving everyone
else out, I thought I'd post a survey to the list to ask what kind of
Linux distros people use. If we get enough responses I'll attempt to
aggregate the data and summarize it.

So, what distros do people use?

For myself, while I used to exclusively use Mandrake (never Mandriva),
for the past few years I've used Kubuntu on the desktop and Debian for
servers.

Cheers,
Tanner

Currently I'm using Ubuntu, Dapper Drake. In the past I have used RHEL
v. 3 (I like Ubuntu better), Red Hat Linux v. 5, 6, and 7, and Mandrake
(a long time ago for Mandrake).

I use Mandriva 2007. I've been a Mandrake Man since mid 2000.

use now, or have used in the past? I've used every release of Red Hat
from 4.1 through 9, with the exception of the 8.x series, RHEL 2.1 and 3,
Gentoo since 2004.0, and (on occaision) Debian of varying vintages.

At the moment my personal PCs are
- Gentoo workstation/server
- Gentoo mp3 server
- RH 9 laptop
- Win 98

My work PCs are
- Gentoo workstation/dev server
- Win XP workstation

and our work server environment contains a mix of RH and Debian servers.

Fedora at home, RHEL at work. Knoppix everywhere for fix-it work.
I've tried Ubuntu as well -- seems nice.

Two servers running CentOS, my firewall box is running RH9 (yeah, yeah,
I know)
and my laptop dual-boots between W2K and FC6. As soon as I can get
wifi working with FC6, Winblows goes away.

And I have dabbled with Mandrake, SuSE, TurboLinux and others in the past.

I've never used Debian or Ubuntu, and I'm not really in any hurry too.
I know
RH based distros and don't feel like dealing with the learning curve
(however slight
it might be) for a different distro. At least not without a compelling
reason to do
so.

As a small correction, we also have one CentOS box to run Zimbra on :).

I also used RHL 7.3 - FC2, then Gentoo for a few years before settling
on Debian-based distros.

Oh but our server is RHEL4 because our (bad) host said it had to be.
Our probable new host PREFERs Ubuntu so we'll most likely switch to that.

Looks like Windows at this job...still using FC6 laptop for the time being.
Tried Ubuntu and OpenSUSE and could use those but FC6 is very nice so far.

Which is just the sort of thing I wanted to hear! But dangit, can sites
stop
using ridiculous account policies?

http://www.pobox.com/chromeless/user_agreement.html
"The customer shall not transmit or receive any threatening, harassing,
libelous
or obscene material. The Customer shall not transmit or receive any material
which is deemed illegal by any local, state, federal, or international law."

Transmit is bad enough. RECEIVE?!? How am I supposed to control what is
sent
to me? Why should I care if what I'm sending violates the laws of another
country?

Sheesh.

I'm going to take a look at their service, but they're off to a bad start
already.

Scott,
I found the easiest way around this crap was to directly set the DNS
in my router to earthlink's east and west coast servers, as described
in this blog entry:

http://blogs.earthlink.net/2006/09/more_info_on_dead_domain_handl.php

Apparently, we're not the only ones cursing Earthlink for this policy
change.

Sounds like silly lawyer boilerplate. I wouldn't worry about it too
much myself. Though if you find a service with a more enlightened ToS
that would be interesting to hear about...

And I would interpret the issue of violating laws as only to mean, laws
whose jurisdiction applies. E.g. if you're transmitting something that
violates laws of Ghana, but the transmission is wholly within the US, I
fail to see how Ghana's laws have any relation at all.

Well I'm on my wife's computer at the moment so it is Wind0ze... arrr
arrr arrr but my own workstation at home (temporarily shut off) runs
ubuntu feisty. My primary workstation at the office is Ubuntu Edgy but
I'm going to upgrade it next week to Feisty.

I run a lot of RHEL on servers at work, primarily because of the great
IBM pSeries hardware support. Ubuntu claims to run on pSeries but they
were lying, at least with edgy anyway.

My Sun boxes that I tinker with at home are a mixed bag... some Aurora,
some Ubuntu (edgy), some OpenBSD. Ubuntu is more enjoyable on those old
machines than aurora but the installer has some quirks to work around on
sun.

Oh, I realize that it's boilerplate. I just was hoping from your experience
that they had more clue. Creating a user agreement that every user will
violate
just by receiving spam is not impressive. If you don't intend to enforce
it,
then take the language out.

I've pointed this out to their support. It'll be interesting to see how

Is there anyone on the list that is using TWC QAM HD with MythTV? If
so can I get a copy of your channels table?

I just rebuilt last week and can't seem to get the HD channels
working totally. I can get NBC and UNCTV, but none of the ones that
are on channel 113.n are showing up. I get lots of other channels
that I guess are the music, etc.

Thanks,
John

Recently replaced Windows XP with Mepis 6.5 on my kids' computer. For a
desktop, it seems pretty sweet. By the way, I counted this as a "Kinda" for
the poll since it's based off of Ubuntu's packages.

My desktop/server is FC2. (Dreading the upgrade, and not sure whether to go
with FC6, FC7, Mepis, or Kubuntu.)

Debian laptop and 2 debian desktops at home for me. Work's server is CentOS,
it's what the thing came with and I don't have reason to change it.
Work[-2] had a bunch of RedHat boxen (and some other misc *nix that
weren't so much my responsibility).

If they could block everything except 25 and 110 to their servers, and
80 to sites that pay for the "privelege", I'm sure they would do it.

I've had good results with dnsmasq. No need to dedicate a server to it,
just run it on each local machine and point the resolver to localhost.
On Debian at least, the package 'resolvconf' will handle the resolv.conf
setup.

Then use the bogus-nxdomain to transform the hijack back into NXDOMAIN.

P.S. They are kind of opposite extremes too, aren't they? I mean, when
I installed Ubuntu, even my wireless Just Worked (TM), and that was like
2 or 3 years ago when that stuff was pretty hard to get to work in other
distros. Gentoo? Well, you just have to love tinkering :)

A while back, I had Unix on a Sun Sparc then Solaris (if I remember the
order correctly), always as a mere user, followed by Red Hat 8 on a
Pentium 3, then Red Hat 9 dual-booted with M$ ME on my long-suffering
roommate's Dell. Debian Sarge now dual-booted with XP on one machine at
work and all by itself on an older box at home. Hoping to soon add
Linux to my laptop and from everything I've read here, it'll probably be
Ubuntu. Still very much at the bottom of the learning curve on all of them.

All right, so I have a follow-up question. Why do y'all use different
distributions for different machines? Doesn't it get confusing?

Andrew,

Would you mind reposting this question with both a different subject
and not replying directly to any of the e-mails in this thread? I'm
afraid your question will probably get lost in this monster thread!

As far as responses to my question... Wow! This is a bigger
response than I expected. :-) Give me a few days (hopefully over
this weekend) to summarize the data and I'll post back to the list.
In the meantime, though, if you haven't yet weighed in, please feel
free to do so! I'll try to include everyone I can in my summary.

Cheers,
Tanner

I sometimes install different distros on different machines to learn
how they each work. Mainly these days, though, I run Kubuntu
on the desktop and Debian for servers. Those are close enough
that they don't get confusing.

Well, I rev my home box rarely - since I don't really need much new
there, and the possiblity of a vulnerability being used against those
machines is extremely rare. So I'm still running RH9 on the old home box
- but with updated apps like Open Office, FireFox, and BZflag - but an
older version of Evolution (that is rock solid).

At work I keep up-to-date to avoid any vulnerabilities and because most
of the personal data is run off hosted apps (or stored on my boxes at
home) - so upgrading is no pain at all.

I run Mandrake on some servers because I learned MSec a long while back,
and I really, really like it, and trust it. OpenBSD for similar reasons:
Security.

I run CentOS because most of the fun goodness for Business VoIP is being
done on that plateform so when I use someone elses hacks they generally
work just fine. I also run CentOS on my laptop because on my off-hours I
contribute back some of the fun goodness with my own hacks.

As an old command line jockey, I have no problems with any distro - as
long as I can find the icon that opens up the gterm session :-)

Ubuntu has been my exclusive distro since the 4.10 beta.

My first Linux distro was Slackware back in 1996-1997. I then moved to
RedHat, then Mandrake, then back to Slackware, then Mepis, and finally
to Ubuntu --- where I've stayed for 2.5 years now.

I've dabbled with a bunch of others -- Fedora, Vector, Linspire, Debian,
etc... --- but I never kept any of them for very long.

Home (inc. wife's and kid's machines) : Fedora
Work (laptops and desktops) : Fedora
The clusters I manage : Fedora

For me, there is little distro confusion. The only differences I have
to deal with are i386 versus x86_64 and the version upgrades.

I think all of the major distros are very, very good these days. Don't
think you can go wrong with any of them.

Running CentOS 4.2 as X is still 6.x and that was needed for the driver
for my touchscreen monitor (GVision, serial port connected. Works great).
Running FC6 elsewhere to be able to easily install near latest packages such
as cinelerra non-linear video editor. Perfer to spend time learning to use
the apps rather than how to compile them - I've spent enough of my life
doing the latter!

Actually, I usually install the latest kernel every few weeks. Build it.
Maybe add in the webcam drivers. And that's what I run on my desktop. That
said, my laptop has vanilla FC6 (2869). It's too old and slow to muck with
rebuilds and installs.

I looked at Ubuntu 6.10, OpenSUSE 10.2, Mandriva 2006, and FC 6 and could
not discern a reason to choose one over the other for me. Of course a fresh
install of FC6 requires adding livna or other repositories and uupdating the
software. One could argue the out-of-the-box install of Ubuntu works better
for the mutlimedia. Went with FC6 to have skill/knowledge of RedHat's
offering. Some people like the integrated management app of SUSE. At some
point dickering with GUI's is dickering with GUI's not matter what OS or
distro you are running. Gnome is very nice because of how I can customize
the desktop. Funny to demo that I can make it LaF like Windows with a
handful of manoevers.

My $.02,
TimJowers

I use RHEL on about 20 servers cause my vendor requires that. I run
CentOS on about 8 servers cause I like the updates from Centos, I run
Debian on 1 server cause that's what my boss made me put on it. Xubuntu
in my opinion is good for a desktop machine, thats what I am dual booting
on my office laptop. Not linux, but I run OpenBSD for my firewalls and
VPNs cause they claim its the most secure. We run mandrake from my days
of liking mandrake over Red Hat, plus at the time Mandrake appeared to be
more user friendly (for the end user.)

In my case, Fedora for my home/work desktop for the driver support of newer
hardware, and the library support for newer apps. CentOS on the servers,
which
don't need any fancy drivers, and need to have a long-term stability without
requiring frequent software upgrades.

Fedora/CentOS are both Red Hat derived, so the differences are minor. No
confusion issues.

I started out using Slackware back in '92 and had to download the disk sets
from sunsite. Since then I have tried out several distros to see which ones
I like. I ran mandrake for a LONG time and eventually switched to redhat.
Ran until the fc change and used fc exclusively up until a couple of weeks
ago. I installed centos on a box to play with and ubuntu on an empty drive
to play with.

I am going to switch to ubuntu as I am VERY impressed with it. I have
become increasingly frustrated with my fc6 install. One of the updates made
a change to the os that makes the machine unstable(reboots at random during
day and kicks user out of session back to gdm login). As I don't actually
do $WORK on my home machines, a wipe and reinstall is never too far away.
I have removable drive bays, so booting ubuntu is just a matter of swapping
drives and restarting the machine.

At work, I use whatever live distro that I have handy(usually slax and
ubuntu) to boot one of the unused machines to noodle around with. Since we
use windows at work, it doesn't really count I guess.

You mean 6.06 LTS? There's no LTS version for 6.10. :)

And, given the knowledge of that trivial detail, you can guess what I
might be running. Link for details: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Ubuntu Edgy (6.10) on the desktops, Ubuntu Dapper (6.06 LTS) on the
servers. Now that Debian Etch (4.0) is bona fide stable, we're using
that exclusively to power the Xen boxen and some of their DomU children.

At home I use rPath Linux + group-port25 from my own port25 mail
server distribution and self built kde. I also have a MythTV system
that's also my own work: a prerelease from mythtv.rpath.org. My work
laptop is running my third self maintained Linux distribution:
kde.rpath.org. By the way, if anyone is interested in working with me
on any of these projects, you're welcome to join.

My next home system will be a Xen dom0 running port25, and
lamp.rpath.org, then I'll retire the current mail/web server.

Honestly, Debian and Ubuntu aren't that different. Same basic

I run Gentoo at home because my desktop is an 800 mhz P3 and I feel good
juicing it up as much as possible. :-) Also, Gentoo is great as a
development environment as it's already setup to compile virtually
anything, and it's integration with CPAN for Perl modules that aren't
already in Portage is *awesome*! I also like just keeping the box up to
date instead of that big upgrade once in a while. And I do love to
tinker. :-)

My media centre (mythtv) box at home is a slightly different story. It's
also running Gentoo but for slightly different reasons. It's not a
powerful machine (1Ghz Via Nehemiah) and appreciates the TLC that can be
applied via Gentoo, but also has some onboard hardware functionality
that seems to be relatively recently supported in Linux. Not sure what
the support is like in the other distros, but it's handy to be able to
compile and install with little effort, and if it's not in Portage (or
not recent enough) I can create on overlay with my own ebuild. Gentoo is
a bit of a pain for this box as I don't like constantly keeping it up to
date, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. And I use distcc to keep
the compile time down.

At work I run Fedora. This is mainly because my desktop is my
development server and our "production" servers (I develop some internal
tools) run RHEL, and it's useful having the environments even slightly
similar. I have considered switching to Ubuntu with some kind of vm
running CentOS for development, but haven't had the time to put in that
effort yet.

As to the question of confusion, I only sometimes get a little confused
with package management, when I desperately want to run emerge on my
Fedora box, but that may be a little desire for more power, rather than
confusion. :-)

It's a combination of factors. But for me, I think a lot of it is a
desire to A. use the latest and greatest, combined with B. apathy
about upgrading machines. So each machine I build or install gets a
fairly recent distro, while other boxes lag. Hence my firewall
running RH9 and my laptop with FC6. And as soon as FC7 Test 4 ships,
I'll probably put that on. :-)

Also in my case; all 3 of the distros I use (RH9, Fedora, CentOS) are
all Red Hat based, so they're very similar anyway.

Since we're on the topic of our favourite distros, how's this for loving
your distro, maybe a little too much:

What if Gentoo ever so slightly changes or "modernize"s its logo? Most
software projects tend to do this over time.

Excuse the marketing doublespeak. Just make sure you get accepted before
doing any work. The "come to the office" is not a huge requirement.
Basically they want to be able to get status from you periodically.

Do you know Linux?

Do you want to earn $500?

rPath is a Raleigh-based start-up that makes software that transforms
applications into software appliances. A software appliance is an
application combined with a Linux operating system in a single
installable package.

You would learn our packaging system, Conary, and our appliance building
tool, rBuilder, to convert popular open source projects into software
appliances. The software appliances must meet certain usability
standards which we will describe when the project is assigned. Most
important, the software appliance must be easy enough for a normal
person to install and use. Each accepted appliance will receive a $500
bounty.

Qualifications:

    * You must be very familiar with Linux b
