Actually I've done it. It works fairly well. In my case both endpoints
have TWC cable modems. The setup started barfing when the roommate
started uploading full-length movies to teh intarweb, but he found
himself promptly without a cable going to his room, so it all worked
out. :D

You're right that it's impractical if you plan on calling most
everybody you know with this setup, but it's a good short-run fix if
you want to have relatively secure conversations with friends or
family.
