I'm talking at least partly (maybe completely) out of my arse here, 
but... As I understand it, a big part of the Fedora 7 release involves
changes to the build system to make it easy for people to tailor their
own distro(s).  And they have a LiveCD now, for sure.  So it might 
(maybe) be worth taking a look at the Fedora project stuff and
see if maybe that would allow you to build what you need.

Or not, I haven't actually worked with any of that stuff myself
yet, so I could be way off... :-)
