[TriLUG] Multithreaded Apps

I'm looking into upgrading my PC and my price limit looks like it will allow
me to invest in an AMD64 X2 CPU + Mobo.  My question is, how many apps a
compiled for 64-bit Linux that actually make use of dual processors and/or
multi-core CPU's?  I know SMP kernels make use of multiple processors, but
what about apps like OpenOffice or GUI's like KDE or Gnome for that matter?
