One of my favorite quotes from Bruce Schneier:

There are two types of encryption: one that will prevent your sister from 
reading your diary and one that will prevent your government.

Likewise, the answer to your question about disk wiping has a lot to do with 
what the disks had on them and where they are going.  If it were my personal 
disks, I would just "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda" and be done with it.  Because 
I know that my secrets are not important enough to anyone else that they would 
invest in the super sleuth tools to recover "wiped" data.  The disks would be 
more valuable as blank media.

If you've got bigger secrets (and better funded enemies), you might consider 
more elaborate tools.

That being said, I am the kind of crypto-nerd that uses AES on my USB flash drive.
