It doesn't get much better than DBAN. http://dban.sourceforge.net/

It's not a command line tool so much as a self-contained boot floppy or
CD based package for nuking hard drives, RAID arrays, etc.  It can do
quick wipes or DoD-compliant wipes that take longer.
