No, we don't need wireless (in fact, actually would prefer to not have it).
So that may be a good solution.

I just tested the Fedora8 LiveCD in the problematic machine and it
still gave an error message:
   dhclient: dhclient is already running - exiting.
BUT it appeared to work, because it also said:
   NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) successful, devices activated
and I found the expected DHCPDISCOVER, DHCPOFFER, DHCPREQUEST, DHCPACK
sequence in the messages log.

So it looks like I've got two possible solutions:
- remove NetworkManager from existing distro
- upgrade to Fedora8
