Minimum Education and Experience:
The analyst band requires a foundation of knowledge and skills in area of
specialization generally obtained from graduating from a four-year college
or university with a major in information technology, computer science, or
a closely related field. Experience in the field of work related to the

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Requirements 3+ years RedHat Linux AS/ES experience PLEASE NOTE: All IT
and Research positions have moved to a new Career Banding compensation
program. For additional information, please refer to our website at

competencies are required for the different banded levels and roles. This
position is being recruited for at the Journey Competency level.

Preferred Qualifications:
The Linux System Administrator will provide essential support for the ITS
Web Systems team. Primary duties involve monitoring and administration of
the systems that make up the web infrastructure that receives 4-8 million
hits per day. This includes responding to system alerts and requests from
Remedy tracking system. They will need to resolve simple to very complex
problems that may impact performance to services and take immediate action
to resolve. Once resolved they will communicate the change and solution on
public forums and detailed information internally. They serve as a
technical resource to the team and ITS as a whole. Participate in periodic
24x7 on-call support (remote Internet access essential for quick
response). All work will be in accordance with established SOP's and
system administration best practices and include the following: Clustered
web servers (RAIS) Alteon load balancers and SSL acceleration Clustered
NAS (primarily NFS and some CIFS) Apache (.htaccess, Alias, VirtualHost,
RewriteRule directives) Administering web applications: Java/tomcat, PHP,
Perl, Mambo, Zope/plone, ColdFusion, TWiki, Joomla, Blackboard Configuring
web applications to communicate with Oracle and MySQL Evaluate and
integrate new applications into existing web infrastructure Open source
software building AFS and NFS Remedy tracking system Open source
monitoring (Nagios, RRDTool) Tuning of systems and applications for
optimum performance Update of internal documentation of all systems and
SOP's Update Knowledge Management pages available to public Review
security and patch levels on all systems Recognize and address security
attacks with countermeasures to restore services Work with various vendors
to resolve technical problems and hardware failures Automate routine
system administration functions The successful individual can work as part
of a growing team of system administrators, has excellent communication
skills (verbally and in writing), can occasionally work independently and
collaborate with other system administrators, takes initiative to prevent
system problems and look for new solutions to current problems. Since the
position is 3rd level support, the incumbent is expected to interact with
excellent customer support skills with faculty, staff and students.
