[TriLUG] Any Kubuntu/Ubuntu users explain to me why my IDE drives show up as sda?

This definitely was an upstream change.  I remember seeing commentary
about it on kerneltrap.  And it's not just deployed for Debian and
Debian-like systems since I see the same behavior in Slackware -current
and Arch Linux, both using 2.6.24 kernels.
