I don't doubt that this is all true, but in your scenario you're not
connecting a Windows client to a Windows file server, either.

>> I'm not sure what that has to do with the original discussion. IIRC (correct me if I'm wrong), the original question was how to share a file on a Linux box with other Windows PC's in a Windows network/domain.

Sort of off-topic, but I don't even know what benefits I'd enjoy if I
did join my Ubuntu desktop to our AD domain. Any ideas?

>> Beats me. I just thought it was a cool thing to do. :) Seriously though, there are supposedly some benefits in regards to managing and auditing workstations in an AD domain using MS tools (e.g., Group Policy). You have to purchase the Likewise Ent. version for those features, however, so for now I can simply say that it's possible to easily authenticate my Ubuntu box on the AD domain which might impress someone. A distant relative perhaps?

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS in a Windows AD network and am able to successfully join the domain using Likewise Open, as well as browse network shares by computer name using Samba and Winbind. You'll have to install winbind through apt as it's not installed by default for some reason.

Reboot the system after installing nautilus-share (permissions won't work until you do). The shared folder will be visible on the Windows Workgroup as a (Samba, Ubuntu) share.
