My suggestion would be to get the ARRL license manual for the Technician
class license ( http://www.arrl.org/catalog/lm/ ) and read it.  Then, take the
online tests.  Some have been mentioned but I'll just mention the one I've
used in the past:  http://www.qrz.com/p/testing.pl  It doesn't really matter
which one you use, just pick one you like.

Then after you can consistently pass the online tests, go to the ARRL
exam search page:

http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml

and find a local exam.  Go there and take the exam.  Voila!

Also, definitely hook up with the rest of the hams in the LUG.  We often
have "nets" (meetings on the air) on the way to and from LUG meetings.
