[TriLUG] short read on mke2fs

This problem appears in google, but no-one has an answer.

I have a 120G disk that I want to use. Currently it's in an
external USB box.

I ran badblocks (rw), no errors; partition, and then mke2fs
with

mke2fs -j /dev/sda?

For the last partition, the mke2fs gets stuck at about 5%
the way through the disk and then after a pause appears to
complete the rest of the process, apparently formatting it.
At the end mke2fs exits with

Writing inode tables: done
ext2fs_mkdir: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted
in short read while creating root dir

The partition doesn't have a file system on it.

Rerunning with

mke2fs -c -j /dev/sda4

doesn't stop at the spot 5% the way through (I let it go
half way through the ro check - I stopped it before it got a
chance to make the fs).

Any ideas?

Thanks Joe
