Seeking a part-time assistant Unix systems administrator. Job is physically
located on the UNC Chapel Hill campus. Please respond to the address in the
ad.

PANIC (Physics and Astronomy Network Infrastructure and Computing), a small
group of 5-7 individuals providing computer support to the Physics and
Astronomy Department at UNC Chapel Hill, currently has an opening for a
part-time assistant Unix systems administrator (nominal 30 hours/week).

Some of the broad responsibilities will include:
o Assisting students, faculty, and staff with common unix utilities (gnu,
LaTeX, etc) and uncommon unix utilities (astronomy, biophysics, etc).
o Solving common operating system and application problems.
o Scripting and programming to solve systems problems.
o Upgrading system software.
o Compiling and installing common unix applications from source.
o Installing, upgrading, and troubleshooting hardware (disks, RAM, etc).
o Ability and desire to work in a team environment.

We primarily use Debian Linux and Windows XP. There are some MacOSX
clients. Servers run Debian Linux and Windows Server 2003. While this job
asks for someone to perform Unix support, some support of Windows and
MacOSX clients will be expected (sorry!)

Any of the following are big plusses:
o Experience with UNIX shell programming, perl, C, C++, or Fortran.
o Experience with AFS concepts (ACLs, volumes, etc).
o Experience providing end-user support and infrastructure support for a
large user community (300+ users).
o Experience managing/administrating any of the following (all in use here):
  - Apache
  - BackupPC
  - Cyrus IMAP
  - DHCP, Bind DNS
  - MIT Kerberos 5
  - LPRng
  - MySQL, Postgres
  - Nagios
  - OpenAFS
  - Samba
  - Sendmail
  - Microsoft Active Directory

Pay is commensurate with experience, but is generally NOT competitive with
industry jobs in RTP (again, sorry!)

If this sounds appealing to you, and you think you have what it takes to
join this highly-motivated group, then PANIC wants you to apply! Please
email your text resume and cover letter to unixadmin-job at physics.unc.edu. No
Microsoft-formatted documents, please. Due to the training required to get
up to speed with our infrastructure and computing environment, preference
may be given to applicants who can commit to at least 8-12 months part-time.

Please note that this job is located in Chapel Hill on the UNC campus. Job
duties require that you be able to lift and carry 50 lbs occasionally. This
position is classified as a temporary position, so it does not include
benefits.

Cheers,
Stephen
