I haven't been getting any system mail for a couple of weeks. I use
alpine, though mail and mutt also show an empty inbox. There are
several cron processes that should email me and Ubuntu is configured to
send root's mail to the admin user, which is me. Looking at mail for
root also shows no mail.

It seems like perhaps permissions were incorrect on /var/mail/mail.
Looking at a working Ubuntu 8.10 installation I see this:

@kailua:~$ ls -l /var/mail/
total 60
- -rw-rw---- 1 jjtuttle mail 55362 2009-01-06 10:05 jjtuttle

The no-mail installation shows this:
zulu:/var/mail$ ls -l
total 6552
- -rw------- 1 mail mail 6694005 2009-01-06 08:34 mail

So, I chmod and chown the mail spool to this:
zulu:/var/mail$ ls -l
total 6552
- -rw-rw---- 1 jjtuttle mail 6694005 2009-01-06 08:34 mail

But it still doesn't work. Any ideas?

Thanks,
James
