[TriLUG] Cheaper to crush them [WAS: sources of second hand laptops?]

A few years back, I was talking to a second-hand computer retailer
who told me that the supply was drying up.

His explanation was that, since most computers become 'second hand' by being
replaced, manufacturers who allow those 'used' computers back onto the
market were sabotaging future sales of new computers to people who didn't
already have one. His assessment was that their markup from selling a new
box was more than enough to cover the cost of buying the old boxes off the
market.

In a nutshell, cheaper to crush 'em.

Sounds like that may be changing. I wonder what that means for the future of
computer hardware, of Linux (and other Free softwares), and for the people
who support them.
