I'm sure they feared the fallout from suing an open-source project.  Can you
imagine the uproar?

And you're right - projects like gcj really hurt Java's reputation.  Sun
should have worked to get Java onto the major distros in a more friendly
fashion.  Heck, just providing the ability to install via yum, apt, etc.
from Sun repositories would have gone a long way.
