This brings up an interesting point.

In our modern world - where we tote our Cell phones with us 24x7 - and they now have access to the web 24x7 - do we really need to send an alert to an external organization. Would it be just as efficient (or better) to send an alert to two or three folks in the company and let them call for the police? Or the alerted folks could turn on their computers and scan the web-cams at the business... and then call the police.

What value-add do we get these days by having an alarm system ring a secondary party like adt?

With a VoIP system, it is very easy to auto call a series of phones and to send out text alarms. We already have apps that dial up folks in series to alert them about support issues, and as part of that process send out text and email alerts.
