[TriLUG] Fighting Ubuntu Desktop + KVM + network bridging

First, the backstory, I'm starting to get more time to play with 
different OSes and Applications.  Basically, get back into the thick of 
things.  I'm looking at Drupal right now and want to compare it with 
some other CM tools for home use.  What I'm enjoying is finally having a 
box big enough to let me try out different OSes and applications in a 
virtual environment without having to commit to them.  It's like having 
a big bag of hoopty machines to beat.  AND they're all stored on the 
RAID array AND can be easily backed up in one fell swoop (if I think 
they're interesting enough to back up).

Now the actual issue.  These virtual machines are worthless if I cannot 
put them out on our lan and be able to hit their services from my 
laptop, etc.  Unfortunately, the Ubuntu UI only provides for NAT access, 
so I've tried the old RFTM approach.  Well, that's got some interesting 
stuff:

server guy from Canonical) says I should edit my /etc/network/interfaces 
file to add a bridge.

Their bridge info only has one port for the bridge_ports.  They are 
saying that I must use values for my network, but I'm not sure if they 
mean I need to unset my eth0 address in network manager or what.

So when I follow what they suggest, I get two interfaces on the network 
with both pointing to the router as the default gateway.  I've tried 
having both addresses with the same network address and with different 
addresses.  As soon as I do this, I can't get past my router.

The help site is nice, but their wiki has no discussion page.  I'm 
wondering if anyone else has gone down this path.  Is this because I use 
NetworkManager?  I've tried searching and thought I'd ask locally before 
I jump into yet another forum with yet another login/password.
