I haven't used TuxGuitar but I'm guessing that it does have a midi output of 
some kind. If you can have it output midi, or maybe save the midi file for 
another application you might look at combining that with either a software or 
hardware synth. That also means you aren't just limited to guitar.

For linux ideas, I'd ask on the Fedora Music mailing list which is all about 
audio software on linux (http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-music-list).
